FRACTURES - Specific

Fractures of the proximal humerus, distal radius, pelvic ramus, proximal femur, proximal tibia, and thoracic and lumbar vertebral bodies occur more commonly in the elderly. These sites consist of predominantly trabecular bone, often seriously weakened by osteoporosis. Most of these fractures, except those involving the hip, are treated nonoperatively. Nonetheless, rehabilitation is often prolonged, and recovery is incomplete. Usually, several months to a year passes before patients regain their preinjury capabilities.
