Medical/Legal Pitfalls:
- Failure to consider abuse as the cause of burns in the
pediatric patient.
- Failure to involve burn specialist in the care of burns,
including minor ones, that involve the critical areas: hand, face, feet and genitalia.
Development of scars in these areas can have significant cosmetic and functional
consequences.
- Not recognizing the potential for airway involvement, even
with the absence of the classic signs of airway burns. The signs of toxic inhalation may
not be apparent for several hours after exposure and the patient may deteriorate very
rapidly.
